Cantina Nino Negri has existed for more than a century in Chiuro, in the heart of Valtellina. Since 1897, entire generations have carried on their shoulders the experience and ancient knowledge of mountain viticulture. An amphitheatre surrounded by the high slopes of the Lombardy Alps and two thousand five hundred kilometres of thousand-year-old dry stone walls. A place bathed in the sun's rays and pervaded by wide temperature ranges, protected by high mountain ranges that keep out the icy northern winds and inhibit the damp southern sirocco. Here, many years ago, the vines known as Chiavennasca found their place. In this happy position, the Nebbiolo grapes have the opportunity and time to absorb all the nuances and peculiarities of the terroir, and to transfer them to a wine that is, to all intents and purposes, unique. Starting in the 2000s, the winery founded by Nino Negri became the flagship of the Gruppo Italiano Vini, also thanks to the work of oenologist Casimiro Maule (Oenologist of the Year in 2007), in office until 2017, and Danilo Drocco, who now heads the winery.

Description

Thanks to its geographical position, Valtellina is a 'unicum' in the Italian wine-growing world: an island in the Alps with mountain ranges that touch four thousand metres, which means that the climate does not follow the climatic characteristics of the rest of Italy. As happened in the past in 2002, Valtellina proves to take advantage of extreme climatic situations thanks to 'Chiavennasca', a Nebbiolo 'trained' to live in the mountains and therefore able to offer sensational responses in cold and difficult vintages. The Nino Negri winery has been producing Sfursat since 1956 with grape drying. The 5 Stelle is its most prestigious Sfursat and has been produced since 1983 only in favourable vintages from Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) grapes, the most extensive terraced vineyard in Italy. It is a wine with vigorous structure and extraordinarily harmonious.

Organoleptic characteristics:

Intense garnet colour with ruby highlights. The bouquet is reminiscent of damp rock, undergrowth and ripe black plum with balsamic notes of bay leaf and basil. In the mouth the tannin is rich and compact with an acidic freshness that accompanies a juicy and crisp fruit, vanilla, liquorice and cocoa. The finish is long and savoury.

Storage time:

More than 10-15 years in optimal storage

Vinification

Harvest at the end of September followed by drying in fruit lofts. Pressing of the Sfursat began the first week of December. Fermentation took place took place at a temperature of 25°-26°.
