Sylvaner

The officially named Green Sylvaner originated from a chance cross between the White Traminer and the Österreichisch Weiß: the former, following a series of mutations, gave rise to today's Aromatic Traminer; the latter, as the name suggests, is an ancient variety indigenous to Austria, which was widespread near Vienna until the end of the 19th century. It is therefore assumed that Sylvaner has Austrian origins. The first evidence in South Tyrol comes from Brixen, where Franz von Guggenberg planted the vine near the Seeburg as early as 1857. It is a grape variety that has adapted well to the cool temperatures of the valley and thrives best in sunny locations at an altitude of 500 to 700 metres. Italian Sylvaners are generally much lighter and crisper than their counterparts from Alsace and Franconia, with light citrus notes and a touch of honey, best consumed within the first two years after harvest.
