The '80s. Salvatore Di Gaetano, a passionate oenologist, was struck by the Firriato district, in the extraordinary countryside of the city of Trapani, an agricultural area deeply marked by vine cultivation and wine culture, located between the beautiful sea of the Trapani coast and the majestic rock of the ancient city of Erice. These are the beginnings of a young entrepreneur, in love with his land and who looks at it with new eyes, glimpsing the potential for growth and development of a wine-growing area of excellence such as that of the Trapani valleys, yet still not expressed with the necessary commitment and the right production approach. It starts from the vineyard, from the first plantings of Nero d'Avola, Catarratto and Inzolia, conducted with the scrupulousness of a modern viticulture centred on a new concept of wine quality that has its primacy precisely in the vineyard and its agronomic management. In the cellar, perfectly healthy, organoleptically complete grapes must arrive, harvested at the right degree of ripeness. Respecting naturalness, exalting oenological value, enhancing the varietal peculiarities of each vine is for Firriato, from the very beginning, an iron rule on which Salvatore Di Gaetano, harvest after harvest, succeeds in forming a new model of wine enterprise, rooted in the territory but with an eye on the most demanding and prepared markets. The Sicily of quality wine is emerging from the cone of shadow that for too long has penalised territories and enterprises; a new and exciting season of Italian wine is about to open, one that has Sicily's oenological driving force. The Firriato winery and the Di Gaetano family are, together with the island's great oenological brands, the protagonists of this important evolution, not only in terms of economic production, but above all in terms of the oenological quality of their wines and their ability to understand the evolution of taste expressed by consumers. These are tumultuous, intense years, with no respite: new wines are born, new farms are acquired and the Cantina's techniques and technological instruments are refined. Recognition and awards grow and, more importantly, consumer approval grows. The world travels, because the world has discovered Sicily and Sicilian wines. Firriato is one of the first Sicilian wine companies to succeed in interpreting this new dimension and international perspective in the best possible way, investing in it decisively and methodically, achieving one of the most solid distribution and commercial successes in the sector in Sicily.
