It was 1880 when Andres Montanar Brugal left the small village of Sitges, Costa Brava, Catatonia, Spain. He settled in Cuba, and after a few years moved to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. He buys a coffee finca and in 1888 creates an ingenio azucarero, ingenio Cuba, owns cane plantations, produces sugar and initially agricultural rum by fermenting guarapo, fresh cane juice. In 1888, he founded Brugal & Co., using his rum experience gained during his Cuban years. For 50 years his company grew, until the nationalisation in the 1930s of the sugar mill and cane plantations by dictator Trujillo. The first Brugal warehouse for ageing rum in oak barrels dates back to 1920. In 1976, with the introduction of Extra Viejo, the company developed the premium rum segment in the Dominican Republic. In 1998 Brugal launched Brugal Limòn, Brugal Pasiòn and Unico. In 2008, the Scottish group Edrington buys Brugal's 80%. Franklin Baez Brugal remains president and the family continues to be responsible for production.

Description

Brugal still represents one of the Caribbean's finest. Brugal 1888 'Doblemente Añejado' Double Aged is a truly extraordinary rum, produced in the Dominican Republic by combining the rich aromas of bourbon and sherry casks through a double ageing process. The entire rum production process takes place in the Dominican Republic, from the selection of the best sugar cane to distillation and the final bottling stage. A special rum with a smooth profile, for those who love long ageing rums.

Organoleptic characteristics:

A dark amber rum with reddish hues, clear and bright. The sophisticated natural sweetness from red fruits, sultanas and dates is perfectly balanced with the spicy, woody and cinnamon undertones. A smooth, round rum with body and character. The perceived sweetness from the caramel and vanilla notes balances perfectly with the peach, cocoa and clove notes. The aftertaste of this fine rum is remarkably long, woody, complex. Elegant and with notes of honey.

Storage time:

over 20 years

Vinification

double multi-column distillation and then maturing for 8 years in casks previously used for Bourbon and then for a further 6 years in casks used for Sherry
