Its curious name is probably due to the plant's characteristic early vegetative stages, from ripening to budding, from flowering to veraison.
The vine is harvested as early as the end of August.
Nowadays, Primitivo is mainly cultivated in the area of Manduria, in the province of Taranto, from which the DOC Primitivo di Manduria and the DOCG Primitivo di Manduria natural sweetand in Barese, in the Gioia del Colle area.
The Primitivo bears an uncanny resemblance to the Californian Zinfandel grape variety. In fact, it is a globetrotting vine.
We find it across the Atlantic, in the United States. In California it is one of the oldest imported varieties, cultivated since 1860 under the name Zinfandel, a name unknown in Europe. It is one of the most important grape varieties in the United States, used mainly for fine red and rosé wines.
For many years, Primitivo was used as a 'blending' wine to reinforce wines from northern Italy, thanks to its naturally high alcohol content, intense colour and structure. Today, however, Primitivo is increasingly being vinified as a pure wine.
Over the past 20 years, a greater awareness of the potential of the Primitivo and thanks to the important work of the winegrowers, it has been possible to enhance this intense and powerful red wine of great elegance and finesse.
Today's Primitivo is a wine robustIt is well structured with good identity aromas, velvety palates and good longevity. It is a wine that appeals to both men and women thanks to its soft, full, warm, sweet and elegant taste.
